Dear Lactnetters,

This link will take you to the names and email addresses of the members of
the Maryland State House committee that killed the Right To Breastfeed Bill
(HB 641).

http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/mdmanual/06hse/html/com/04env.html

2 members of this committee voted against the bill and 15 abstained. One
delegate who abstained, Delegate Redmer, told me he supported the bill, but
hadn't gotten any mail telling him he should vote for it, but had gotten
plenty of negative feedback, especially from women, especially from female
colleagues. Ugh. A common thread is not only that they don't believe bfing
mothers who do so discretely face any harrassment in public. Another is
that they believe women will use this as an excuse to bare their breasts.
Another is that they don't see the problem with just giving babies bottles
in public. One of the more "out there" comments from a legistlator was
that breastfeeding at work might constitute sexual harassment.

I know that only a few of you are from Maryland, but national and even
global pressure can only help underscore for these legislators that
breastfeeding moms and babies deserve a law protecting their right to
breastfeed in public.

If you haven't read the article in the Baltimore City Paper
(http://www.citypaper.com/current/mobs.html), reading it now might motivate
you to let these delegates know that there are MANY of us out here who find
their thinking wrong, and very bad for infant, mother and public health.

Thanks,
Kerry Ose
