When Jean said
"And then, whammo, along came HMO's and 2 day stays. The mothers, having
served their economic purpose to the OB's, anesthesiologists, and hospital,
were out the door..."
she said it all.
WE know all the reasons---health-related, woman-related, child-related,
family-related---why we women should get respect and support for birthing and
nursing our babies. But as long as the "free market" dictates the
worthwhile-ness of any activity in terms of whether it puts money into
someone's pocket, we can forget about all those good reasons.
This is why I've always felt that breastfeeding is a subversive activity, in
the very best sense of the term.
