I rarely post to Lactnet although I have been subscribing for years. Today an issue came up that often frustrates me and I am wondering how to respond.
A pregnant mother called today regarding medication during lactation. She has been having depression, sleeplessness and panic attacks when trying to fall asleep. Several meds have been suggested by her doctor, who insists that she can take these now but that she definitely shouldn't take ANY meds while lactating. Sigh.
I read from Hale about each of these meds, explained the difference between taking meds in pregnancy and taking them in lactation, and tried to give a condensed version of the intro. to Hale which explains why certain medications are safe. Do any of you have a short "speech" which you use to briefly explains why some meds can be safe during BF? I always discuss Hale's credentials and mention having heard him speak at various conferences as well.
My main concern is that I am frequently asked why doctors don't know this. How do I go about explaining this in a manner which doesn't put their MD in a bad light (which would, in turn, put me in an awkward spot)? I usually explain that many med schools don't discuss lactation ind-depth and that there are a limited number of areas that a doctor can "keep up" on in their reading. I usually refer to medical journals and the multitude of studies out there in support of BF, safety of meds in lactation, etc. I always offer to copy the pages in Hale for them and their doctor. But I fear that in the end, I might be just considered a quack...
