Most diffusion of innovations research and also nursing research shows
that it takes a minimum of 20 (twenty!) years from when something is
researched and published to use of that info!!!!!!!!!!!!! From my summary
on research based nursing "one recurring theme was that the average staff
nurse does not have sufficient time to read and implement practices based
on research. Another is that research is hard to obtain and when obtained,
hard to understand." Another recurrent theme was whether or not
institutional support for use of research helps innovations to be used.
The results were mixed.
Bear in mind that this research was mostly pre 1991. Since that time the
climate in nursing has undergone a drastic change for the worse (not enough
nurses, not enough time). So whether or not a nurse would use newer BF
info at this point in time, 2001, seems to me to be very "iffy." And
sorry, I don't have any answers or solutions :-( Pat in SNJ
