Dear Robyn, well, what you are saying, no bili first-just "look" yellow and
one hour under lights - doesn't meet ANY standard of care in US. And a 9
(if using US numbers) isn't anything to worry about if baby is fullterm and
not sick. Be sure baby is latched on and really receiving milk. I'd verify
mom's supply by counting pees and poops. Also how many days old are
babies? This figures into the equation too. For heavens sake, don't let
anyone start supplementing with formula! This sounds like US nurseries in
1970! Every other baby was being lit for rediculiously low levels (like
8-10).
Sounds like something is seriously out of whack there. Have drs just been
sold on idea of phototherapy? are the lights new? If so they really need
to learn the correct indications for using phototherapy and the length of
time needed to make a difference.
Do you have a good ally at the mission hospital who will be willing to
tackle this before it becomes a hugh problem and interferes with
breastfeeding? Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
