Dear Friends,
I hope you all can help me because I am stumped. I got called from a
Pediatrician that I work with that he had just finished checking a baby,
and if I could see her. The story is like this. 6th birth, mother BF
first 5 for average 2 years. Baby is one week old, 3030 kilo at birth,
2900 at discharge. All well in hospital and at home, since home baby
making over 8 urine and about 5 stools, yellow mustard color. All was fine
until last night, baby refused the breast and would not latch. There was
not neccessarily much crying, baby would fall asleep, only to wake again
after 5 minutes crying. Ped checked (it is Sat night) all things besides
blood and urine tests which will be done tomorow, and said that all on exam
seemed normal. Baby does not seem lethargic, just won't latch. Last
night the baby slept 6 hours which obviously had this experienced mother
very concerned. What I observed does not seem like behavior shut off, it
almost looks like baby "forgets what to do". There is some rooting, but
baby does not follow through with a suck. I did not observe even one
sucking pattern. Digital suck exam all was normal. Baby does eat EBM from
a bottle fine. I taught mother to finger feed with FF tube and to watch
very closely throughout the night. The tube feeding was normal while I was
there, baby ate 45 cc beautifully. In the middle we tried to put baby on
the breast and same result. Remember, this was sudden, she had 6 days of
perfect BF at home before this. Mother tried skin to skin, she did not
change soap, perfume, etc. She has tried all different positions, all with
same results.
What am I missing? I am almost sure something will show up in blood etc
tests tomorow.
Please help!
Thanks,
Jessica Billowitz, IBCLC
