Lactnetters,
I had a call from a mother with a baby who is 4 weeks old. Yesterday
when she went to the Peds for a normal check-up, they found blood in the
baby's stool. The Ped immediately went to the assumption that the baby is
allergic to it's mother's milk. (Why do they always blame the mother's milk
for this?) Like formula would make this better???
Anyway, I explored the mother's diet. She does not eat much dairy.
Sometimes some cream cheese on a bagel. Milk only on occation to dip graham
crackers in, no ice cream, yogurt, cheese, etc. Her ped's office suggested
no broccoli, cauliflower, since that makes a gassy baby and may cause the
bleeding...?
Mom says that this is the second time they have found this. She has a
good latch and no bleeding at the nipples.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Mom feels that the baby may have
something wrong...since she had some difficulties at the beginning. The
baby eats q2 hrs during the day and q3-5 at nite for 10 minutes each
breasts. She stools and voids well. Any ideas would be appreciated.
                 Thanks, Betsy Wells-Gephart RN, IBCLC
