While nursing my 2nd child (my first boy). He had a tremendous suck. And
boy would he guzzle, I guess because of my very strong MER. He would take
all of the let down in a matter of minutes (seconds?), release and within a
few seconds spit everything back up on me, I had to nurse with a bath towel
in my lap and across the front of me. Then he would settle in and nurse
quietly on the other side for a few more minutes and then quit, usually
needing a pacifier for more sucking.
I never could achieve that 10 minutes per side thing. And he gained like a
champ.
At 6 months, after discontinuing 3 months of mother in law help(?), we
started at daycare. I would leave 3 8-oz bottles of formula, (I now know
this was too much but I was not sure what he would need.) He could empty
one of those bottles in 2 minutes flat! The daycare workers were always
amazed. Then they would give him baby food or the daycare baby menu. No
wonder he didn't need me. He was stuffed after 9 hours of gorging.
The daycare loved timing his bottlefeeds. (Bottles were the J&J
Healthflow, when they first came out in '94.)

P.S. If you're wondering why I left formula it was because my entire store
of Breastmilk was gone because MIL gave him everything stored in the first 3
months and my employer wouldn't let me pump. I have learned a lot since,
then, my 3rd born never got a drop of formula I had much more stored and
would nurse him at the daycare at lunch times. (The 1st born, also, received
no formula for I didn't return to work with her.)
