As an LLLLeader of 23 years, I learned the importance of being there for the
mom when she is in distress. I haven't been an active Leader in several
years, but when I started as an IBCLC in '96 I made it clear to my clients
that they can call me 24/7. When someone ask me why I tell my clients they
can call me 24/7, I reply, "if I'm not available in a moment of doubt or
distress the mom will reach for the formula which is usually as close as her
telephone and I would rather she call me." In a perfect world, a new mom
wouldn't have to call a LC or LLLLeader for breastfeeding help or questions,
she could call her mother or her neighbor or her sister or her aunt or any
other mother with children. But, in a world where Ross, Mead Johnson, and
Nestle are the "experts" on infant feeding and breastfeeding has become a
lost art, those of us who are willing to be on call at all times are doing a
much needed service. May God bless all the breastfeeding angels both the
daytime angels and the nighttime angels.
Warm regards,
Pat Lindsey, IBCLC - Lactation Services
