Dear friends,
This is the first time I'm posting a question on this list. However, I've
been following the discussions on your wonderful list for quite a while. My
name is Ingrid Rowshan, born in Sweden, and since 3 years I live in Spain.
I've been active as a LLL leader for several years and from this summer I'm
a brand new IBCLC, the first and only so far here in Spain.
I would need your input on the following case.
This mum called me when her baby was 1 week old. She had had a really
difficult forceps delivery. Her problem at that time was bleeding and sore
nipples and unhappy baby. I helped her with proper latch on and positioning
and from there on nipples healed and baby fed well.
The baby is now 5,5 months old and fully breast fed on demand. Baby does not
use any passifier. The mum has read a lot of LLL material and is pretty well
informed.
Her main concern now is the rapid (excessive?) weight gain of her baby. The
baby was born 3 kgs, now at 5,5 monts it weighs 9 kgs. Trippled birth weight
in other words. The rapid weight gain started at 2.5 months and continues.
Length wise the baby has followed the normal growth curve. Birth 49.5 cm,
now 66.5 cm. Parents are normal weight and height. No siblings. Mum thinks
weight gain might have something to do with the vitamin supplements she is
taking (she's seeing a naturopath).
As far as I know fully breastfed babies that are fed on demand are supposed
to regulate their own caloric intake. It is also said that the birth wight
is normally not trippled until 1 year of age. Is this rapid weight gain
normal?
Secondly. Mum says baby wants to nurse "all the time" and lately the baby
has been waking up very frequently at night, every hour, to nurse. Baby
sleeps wih mum. Mum says baby seems very tired but just won't fall asleep.
The baby spits up after almost every feed. Passes yellow stools that
sometimes are green. Shows a keen interest when parents eats. To me it
sounds like baby might be ready for some solids. But mum is hesitant since
she has read that it's better to wait until at least 6 months, if not
longer.
Thirdly. Baby has had a cold for the last 3 months. Stuffy nose and mucous
cough since 2.5 months of age. Skin looks fine and healthy. Ped. can't find
anything wrong with baby. Mum has pollen allergies. Dad no allergies. Maybe
a good idea to put mum on dairy free diet?
I need your clear minds to help me to sort out this mother/baby case. Is
that weight gain normal or not??
