I would think that the urinary reflux could definitely be the cause of slow
weight gain as it often leads to frequent UTI.  Any ongoing low grade
infection can compromise weight gain in an infant.  We battled this for years
with my daughter, she is an adult now and still has to be very careful to
maintain a high fluid intake to avoid UTI.
But, of course, the ultimate question-  does this really have anything to do
with how the baby is fed?  Nope other than adequate fluid intake, bf probably
just makes things better.
