Dear Tammy and all,
I seem to meet 2 kinds of grandmothers, the ones for whom
breastfeeding went great and was a blessing in their lives, and the ones
for whom it did not work out, or was not done because of cultural
influences. I usually bring grandmothers into the teaching conversation,
and often state that good information and assistance was not available to
them, thus helping them to mourn a loss and deflect guilt. I let them
speak of their experiences if they want, to allow venting of feelings.
To the ones for whom breastfeeding was wonderful, I heap on the praise
and say something like 'You'll be a great resource for your daughter';
hoping to convey she is an important person here, too.
Good luck and have fun!!!
