This warning not to drink and breastfeed has been going on for a long time.
Women are told, even by lactation consultants, to "pump and dump" for 2
hours after each drink. Women are warned that the baby will be brain
damaged if they drink and breastfeed.
This is simply a reflection of our neo puritanical society. If a drug is
for fun or not legal, then it must be bad for the baby. Personally, I tell
a mother who asks me if it is okay to breastfeed and drink that as long as
she is not to drunk to hold the baby it's okay. And I also tell the mother
who asks about marijuana that the occasional joint is also okay.
If we tell mothers it's okay to take sertraline (Zoloft) and breastfeed,
(and this is quite right), then why are we so hysterical about alcohol?
