In reply to Judy's question: I've often spoken /posted about how
delicious it is to sleep surrounded by baby (or babies). But I can also
relate to having to get up for "potty breaks" in the night -- this is
the kind of thing I think about when people talk about getting their
babies to sleep through the night. I haven't slept through the night
since my teen years. I think the training manual on motherhood should
include getting to sleep quickly and waking up quickly, sleeping in
various positions, etc. The kind of light sleeping that makes you aware
of needing to void is the same kind of sleep that will protect your
newborn from harm and ensure that he gets lots of milk while learning to
breastfeed (and breathe, regulate his temp. etc.) It usually isn't a
problem to get up, as long as you don't have a "permalatch" baby (for
whom "weaning" begins with getting him off the breast for a few minutes
every night while you get up and go to the bathroom). I've said it
before, but people seem intrigued by the idea that in my husband's
aboriginal culture light sleeping and minimal sleep needs are considered
a great asset.
Jo-Anne, who spent most of last night rearranging four children in a
king-size bed.
