Hi! I'm new to Lactnet, but have always wanted to subscribe, having been told great things by a friend/LLL leader. I am a LLL "group mom" and aspiring LC (I'm looking into the requirements). Hopefully, that qualifies me to be on this list. Anyway, I was interested in a recent post about a bf'ing mom who consumes a lot of soy and its possible negative effect on the growth of her baby. We hear a lot about soy as a good alternative to a baby allergic to dairy products (I'm talking about a baby/toddler already on solids). If it's true that soy has a deleterious effect on growth, what can the many moms whose babies are allergic to dairy give as an alternative to the soy alternatives? Meat and fish have their own risks (hormones, PCBs) so I wouldn't want those to be my child's only source of protein/calcium, supplemental to my milk.
