Kathy Leeper helpfully explained,
<<Yes, a hematocrit of 35% is listed as the MEAN value for a 2 month-old in
Harriet Lane. However, 2 standard deviations below the mean (which would
still be in the "normal range") is listed as 28% (or a hemoglobin of 9.4) I
personally would NOT supplement an otherwise thriving infant for a hemoglobin
above 9.>>
The pediatrician was concerned that this baby's iron would keep dropping as
she used up her prenatal stores. If her homoglobin was down near 9, would
you be following up with further testing? Or starting solids on the earlier
side?
Or is it really fine-and-forget-it?
Thanks. Elisheva
