I am working on my pediatrician, who basically thinks formula is fine and has
a waiting room full of crates of it to give away :(. But she did promise to
read any research I would bring her.
I am preparing a stack to bring in at Yemima's next well visit, this coming
week, and have started with the references in the AAP statement.
However, amazingly, it's now 3 years since that landmark. If anybody knows
in of, in particular, any more recent research that back up the early studies
suggesting a protective effect against IDDM, against Crohns, and against
lymphoma, would you please forward them to me?
(The ones in the AAP statement, that I already have abstracts for, are:
Mayer EJ, Hamman RF, Gay EC, et al. Reduced risk of IDDM among breast-fed
children. Diabetes. 1988;37:1625-1632
Virtanen SM, Rasanen L, Aro A, et al. Infant feeding in Finnish children <7
yr of age with newly diagnosed IDDM. Diabetes Care. 1991;14:415-417
Gerstein HC. Cow's milk exposure and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Diabetes Care.
1994;17:13-19
Koletzko S, Sherman P, Corey M, et al. Role of infant feeding practices in
development of Crohn's disease in childhood. Br Med J. 1989;298:1617-1618
Rigas A, Rigas B, Glassman M, et al. Breast-feeding and maternal smoking in
the etiology of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in childhood. Ann
Epidemiol. 1993;3:387-392
Davis MK, Savitz DA, Graubard BI. Infant feeding and childhood cancer.

Shu X-O, Clemens J, Zheng W, et al. Infant breastfeeding and the risk of
childhood lymphoma and leukaemia. Int J Epidemiol. 1995;24:27-32 )
And of course if you know of anything else really flamboyantly fabulous,
beyond what's in the AAP, I would love that too!
Thanks!
