Jennifer, Linda and others,
I just walked in the door from a postpartum visit, read your posts on
misinformation given by HCPs and had to chuckle! My new
Mom was asking about increased caloric needs r/t lactation stating that the
pedi who examined the baby in the hospital (a world renowned Boston area
pedi) told her to increase her caloric intake by 5000 cals /per day! My
immediate assumption was that he said/meant 500 but when I corrected her she
stated that he was very emphatic about the need stating that her body had
greater reqs then a "bricklayer" and recommending that she eat a "pint of
ice cream daily"! We had a good laugh!
I can envision a cartoon with a Mom (rather chubby) at 4 months postpartum
wondering why she has gained weight since she has only increased her calories
by 4000!
