Hi all,
I am not a lactation consultant, just a labor and delivery nurse who
belongs to this list to learn as much as I can to help women to
breastfeed successfully (as I did!).
I had a question recently I wasn't sure how to answer. Maybe you can
help me.
The woman is expecting her second child after an 11 year interval. She
breast fed her first child and, as a result of undiagnosed mastitis, she
had two surgical procedures under general. She says that, as a result
she only BF for one month and was told that she probably couldn't BF
another child.
My instinct is to assume that this doctor was uninformed but is it
possible that milk ducts were sufficiently disrupted as to cause an
inability to nurse.
I am assuming that only one breast was operated on but I don't know that
for a fact.
Also, I am looking for your best advice on what to tell her to prevent
the possibility of developing mastitis again if she does BF this baby.
I know some things to suggest but I sure you all know more!

Thanks in advance for your time.
