 I'm sure the psychiatrist has had little experience with breastfeeding with
or without a history of abuse. The mother is not my patient and has not been
referred to me in any way. I only know of this case because the psychiatrist
has approached me for information. I think this is a very good sign that she
(the Dr) is interested and open to be educated in this area. Perhaps you
could suggest some pertinent papers  (perhaps a review of the literature on
breastfeeding and a history of abuse?? if available?)  that I may recommend
to her. Personally I think  the cause of this is probably multifactorial,
and I do agree that a dissociative state is probably more of a possibility
than  the Dr is prepared to admit (but I think she probably just needs a
little time to think on it). Unfortunately, the mother is unable to express,
she has the same response when expressing as when breastfeeding. I have
asked the Dr if she would be willing to ask the mother to express under an
EEG - this may shed some light on Elshiva's ideas about sleep and let down.
