It gives the baby the benefit of all the rich fatty hind milk.
For the record I am a LLL Leader and a Tandem Nursing mom of two.  My
son was 3 when his sister was born, he went a *no solids* binge after
his sister was born for about 2 weeks, they both nursed very well at the
breast, together.  She gained weight just fine, my milk came in quickly
and today they still nurse together.
He is 4.5 and she is 1.5 years old.
That midwife needs to get her personal bias' out of her medical advice.
LLL has a pretty extensive amount of information on Tandem Nursing in
the BAB, and so does the NMAA.  And I believe that very issue is
covered, that the older nursling won't *deprive* the baby of anything,
in utero or out!
