More recent work has been done on bone density by Polatti et al 1999.
They investigated bone density up to 18 months pp. The women in the testgroup
breastfed for 6 months and then weaned in the next month (Don't ask me about the
ethics of such a study!). Bone density was measured after 3,6,7, 12 and18 months
in nonbreastfeeding, breastfeeding women and breastfeeding women who where
calcium supplemented. Mean outcome was an initial decrease and a stronger gain
in density afgter weaning with no difference in supplemented and non
supplemented.

during and after lactation. Obstet Gynecol 1999, 94:52-6
