Kudos to Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC for the article
Breastfeeding:strategies for Success in the new magazine by the March of
Dimes called Mama.

She has incorporated so well the new recommendation of stressing the "how
to" instead of the "why to" in her article - and has done it well. Yes,
she does state the why to - but in addition stresses the need for mothers
to create their support system - and how to go about doing it. She also
addresses the concerns such as returning to work which often cause moms to
not even try to start breastfeeding. She even has a section just for dads.
I was very pleased to see this!

THEN I read the Spanish magazine by the same organization and was sad to
see that the same information was not provided for there - even
mis-information related to the AAP recommendations! ("up to 12 months"
rather than at least 12 months). I have written a letter suggesting that
Catherine could have been a resource for the author assisting in making
their articles more equal in content and effectiveness.

The March of Dimes were very astute in not wanting to make a direct
translation of one magazine to the other - rather the articles in Spanish
are written by different people and the pictures and food recommendation
reflect the more "hispanic" flavor and styles. (Though as a Puerto Rican I
often resent the "lumping" of all of us who are Spanish speaking into a
big kettle - any more than French Canadians and French or Austrians and
Germans and Swiss or Australians, Canadians and British would appreciate it
- it seems to work in this case.) However, the quality of the information
should be equivalent. I have not had time to read all the other articles
there, but our Maternal and Child Health - CPSP ConsultationTeam (Social
Worker, Dietitian, Health Worker and me, all bilingual), will!

Great job Catherine!
