Denice Jentlie posts on a mother with CP who wants to breastfeed and states:
"she is completely wheelchair bound and has very little fine motor skills,
is unable to write, and has a hard time multi-tasking"
This is good, as it should establish beyond doubt that any other method of
feeding would not be less challenging.
I respect and sympathize with her goal of being self-sufficient, and admire
her for having achieved it regarding herself alone. I also wonder how
realistic it is for her to expect that she will be able to have the same
degree of self-sufficiency when another person is added to the equation.
That person being an infant doesn't make the situation simpler!
My thoughts as I read, were to get an OT involved, but that has been done
and it hasn't accomplished the task. Maybe another OT would help. Maybe it
isn't doable and it would be worthwhile to take a step back, re-evaluate,
and consider other options. If she had chosen to use bottles, who would
have done the actual physical work entailed then? Supporting her goal of
breastfeeding will still be the most effective way of helping her, and will
have numerous other benefits to her and her baby.
