<I remember her telling how she tricked her
first baby into nursing by slowly trickling milk over her breast with a
dropper (this was in the days way before SNSs) >

During those same vintage years, I remember calling a LLL warmline
counselor when, after I deliberately weaned my son fairly suddenly at 8
months, he got a rash and I changed my mind a week later, and tried to
start again. He would latch, give a few sucks, then come off and complain
loudly because he wasn't getting what he expected.

She told me to put a small container of "the other white liquid" on the
endtable beside me. She suggested that I fill the dropper, and slip the
tip into the corner of his mouth while he was starting to nurse, and
whenever he paused, give him a "reward" of a few drops. Within a week,
things were back to normal.

As I remember, it was MUCH simpler than juggling the paraphernalia I have
seen since. I also read where Chele Marmet advises periodontal syringes
used the same way, with several of them filled, and "at the ready" beside
the mother so there is no refilling during the feeding.
