I can get facts and figures, and I'm sure come up with a wonderful
presentation, but if my audience looks at my physical appearance and shuts
me out, then I've done nothing. I'd really appreciate help that would
enable me to connect with Black and Latino mothers. I was a young single
mother with my first, so I at least have that link, but more help would be
appreciated.

Lynette,
Find a peer to help you w/ the presentation. When I began a peer counseling
program, I was told I would never find women in the poor urban community who
had bf at least one year. I found many! If you ask around, you will probably
be able to find a young mom who can help you deliver your message. If you
can't find a mom, plan to go in w/ a casual, not rigid approach. Be less
concerned about pushing a lot of info than about building rapport. Get them
talking and ask them questions. I have worked extensively w/ teen moms and
they tend to be very open. I would rather do a series of support group
meetings than a presentation. That's what worked w/ our teen moms. They loved
the group and they got the information over time. I think the committment to
meeting w/ them made a difference, rather than the one-time, "I'm going to
tell you what to do" kind of approach. Teens hate to be treated like
children, even though they are children. It is a dual-edged sword, b/c they
need to be taken care of, yet they need to be capable of taking care of a
helpless baby. As soon as the first mom has her baby and breastfeeds, you
will have your peer support.
