This is a manifestation of the basic concept that we get what we pay
attention to. When I have done labor support, I expended a lot of energy
helping mothers focus on the process within them, rather than pain and fear.
As an LC, I see the same thing w/ breastfeeding mothers. Those who focus on
fear, pain, and the belief that they or their babies cannot breastfeed are in
deep trouble right from the start. This does not mean they should ignore pain
as information, but to allow it rule their choices and awareness of
themselves and the bf relationship is highly detrimental.
