Hi all,
I don't do many consults now, just whenever the small local hospital calls
me to do a freebie (which I don't mind at all, BTW). It's usually a "train
wreck." Tonight they call. 17 year old mom, with 10.5 # baby who wouldn't
latch. Mother heavily drugged during birth, 2 VERY flat nipples, and 2 wide
apart pendulous breasts with no sign of colostrum after 24 hours. She is
pumping but not getting a drop. I could not get baby to latch since they
had just fed him isomil (via syringe) and he just wouldn't wake enough to
cooperate. I did help her position correctly and taught her a miniclass on
breastfeeding and I did have a good conversation with the teen dad who
promised he will support her and keep visitors away for awhile. (There were
6 people in the room when I got there.) I told her I would come again when
she got home, but it doesn't look promising. I will be very interested to
see if she even makes much milk.
Just wanted to share...
Thanks for listening.
