Vulnerable babies (for whatever reason) do need to be checked more often.
The baby I mentioned had no red flags at 2 mo vss and mom (innocent little
first time dear) had no cause to question what she was seeing at home. Now
probably if she had been seen by an astute HCP s/he would have considered
the ever present pacifier a red flag, but "pacifiers" are such a normal
part of life that most HCPs wouldn't even take note of them. I do notice
pacifiers and am always pushing for not making them so available to baby.
( I hate those little clip -on straps) They are really dirty, little gizmos
in the older baby's life.
An addendum: pacifiers do have a place. there is some decent research by
people I respect, that shows they have a few indicated uses. It is the
utter pervasiveness of pacifiers that I dislike. "Every" baby in the world
