I'm just wondering what the nature of the concern was regarding pumping.
Did health practitioners perceive the *process of lactation* as harmful to
her health and stamina, etc.? In what way and based on what evidence? Or
did they perceive the act of pumping itself as too much work or calorie
expenditure or...? How knowledgeable are they about breastfeeding: are they
appropriately weighing in the benefits of breastfeeding to maternal and
child well-being? When is it anticipated that this mother's health and
strength will return? A few days, weeks, months? Did anyone consider the
possibility of OTHERS doing all of the activities involved in pumping and
storing milk FOR this mother? If this woman has friends who are willing to
pump their own milk for her, would they be willing to come and pump HER own
milk for her? The mother could continue lactating without spending any
energy herself on the pumping process. And how does this mother feel about
the loss of breastfeeding? Would she be interested in relactation down the
road?
Creativity is often critical to mother-nursling pairs in hospital settings.
