Our NICU uses the freebie nipples from the formula company, including the
softer red ones. Then they remark that the baby cannot nurse yet because it
had respiratory difficulty during bottle feeding (never mind about Meier's
studies--they don't want to hear that breast will be easier for many of these
babies trying to coordinate suck-swallow-breathe). I get my moms pumping and
tell them all about the research so they know it is likely the bottle flow
and not their baby with the problems. I then tell them that our goal is to
get that baby OUT of the NICU ASAP, even if it takes a gallon of formula. As
long as mom gets going with her milk supply, we can work with the baby once
the NICU releases them. Sooooo frustrating!!
