One of the few numbers I've committed to memory (although I double-checked it
in the Harriet Lane handbook before posting here) is that a normal hematocrit
for a 2 month old can be as low as 28. The normals for hematologic parameters
are very different in the first year or so of life, and I'm frequently
looking them up. The doctor who was worried about a hematocrit in the 30's in
a 2 month old should be directed to an age-specific table of normals.
