Jo-Anne,
Were you talking about the LLL peer support groups? La Leche League Peer support groups are not available in our city, so the WIC program has implemented one. Also, as I have 9 years of public health experience behind me, often times mothers from low-income households identify more with another mother with a similar background or traditional foundation, (ie.e. hispanic, Native American, African American, etc.) and are linked up with another mom with whom they can easily communicate. it has been observed in our community (and I think others too) that these moms do not usually attend LLL meetings, nor do they make phone calls to peer counselors on a regular basis when having trouble. WIC peer counselors make phone calls to the mothers on a continuous basis whether the mother has contacted them or not.
