I guess I must have missed some email in this thread b/c I didn't see anyone
advocate shoving on the chin of a baby who doesn't open up prompty enough.
I'd advocate gentle pressure on the chin in a situation where baby was
beginning to cause discomfort to the mom due to not opening wide enough, or
where baby was frustrated b/c of not being able to nurse 'properly'.
In my own situation, my baby didn't open wide enough, but was nursing
seemingly well and was happy. It didn't hurt - right away. I figured we
could work on it over time. Well, after a pain free first and second day, I
noticed a tinge of soreness. next nursing, incredible soreness. next
nursing, cracks and blood. This happened very quickly over the course of
less than a couple of hours. Thank goodness proper management was able to
heal it very quickly.
