Dear Yvonne
There are some mums that do not put on any breast growth during pregnancy,
but may still go on to breastfeed successfully. Research (Hartmann & Kent)
using computerised breast measurement followed a group of mums from pre
conception to weaning. One mother had no breast growth during pregnancy,
soft breasts and no sensation of the milk coming in during the first week of
lactation. She was supported with the usual means for increasing supply and
baby was fed complimentary feeds. By 4 weeks post partum breast growth had
increased and she was feeding the baby successfully with all breast feeds. I
have also had one mother who for all her 3 children experienced the same
thing, no breast growth, milk not "coming in", took maxalon and expressed
post feeds and comp'ed. With all three she had established breastfeeding by
4 weeks. So, my motto now is to always be hopeful, hang in there for as long
as possible and use the usual means of supporting and encouraging supply.
Some women just don't seem to fit the "normal" pattern but can still get
there in the end.
