Baby delivered by C/S for nonreassuring fetal heart rate. Mother and baby
A+. Coombs negative. No bruising noted. Bilirubin 8.3 at 22 hours of age.
Repeat at 29 hours of age 10.8, at 38 hours of age 11.0 direct bili .06,
at 49 hours of age 10.8 following 6 hours of phototherapy. Following
receiving results of 11.0, resident ordered baby to breastfeed than give
the baby 45 cc formula. If baby won't take entire 45 cc of formula (given
by nipple), to stop breastfeeding. Of course, baby wouldn't take all the
formula, so phototherapy was ordered and mother was to breastfeed 10
minutes each side, then formula ad lib. This is the mother 2nd baby.
Other baby was jaundiced also and breastfeeding was stopped and never
restarted. Of course, concerned that this would happen again. Baby was
given supplement of formula while mother breastfeeding and then later by
syringe.
About a week or two ago a baby had ABO incompatibility, was placed on
phototherapy and breastfeeding stopped.
Comments please.
