My dear departed grandmother was from East Prarie, Missouri and used all
sorts of "folk medicine" on her kids. She was not with us when I had my
breastfed kids but I"m sure she is smiling down on us. A poultice was always
wrapped in cheesecloth or flour sacking (closely woven fabric) before
applying to the skin. Putting anything on the skin without a layer of
"protection" may burn the skin or irritate it in some way. My mother has told
me some really good stories about using packer's pine tar salve to "draw" a
boil to a head. yuk.
