Hi All,
I hope I get to send this message, my isp has been messed up for months
now, and I have gotten to read some lactnets, but cannot send mail most
days.
This baby sounds like she is being overfed. "Gulps" for 5-10 mins are
about all most little tummies can hold. Have mom try keeping baby on
the first breast, then use the other breast the next time she wants to
feed. The aversive behavior happens because baby is getting more milk
than she wants (do you want to have to drink so fast you have to
gulp?). Trying to increase flow or supply is only going to make this
worse.
Usually oversupply problems seem to appear at about 3 months of age,
because according to Marjorie Meyer(sp?) Palmer, a speech and feeding
therapist, at this age suck becomes volitional as opposed to being
reflexive earlier. In other words, a one month old who is getting
drowned has no real recourse. But a 3 month old can bite to reduce
flow, refuse to eat, etc.
