<< "Most newborns need to nurse an "average" of eight to twelve times in 24
hours. Some babies nurse less frequently while others nurse more frequently.
Less or more frequent nursing is not a problem unless the baby has fewer wet
diapers or bowel movements than normal and the baby is not gaining
 well........

Due to individual differences, healthy breastfed babies may nurse as often as
every hour or as infrequently as every four hours and thrive.""

Right. Unfortunately, this isn't this information that filters down to mom.
I was in the room at the hospital when the IBCLC told my SIL that "five
minutes was okay for now, but you want to aspire to nurse for 20 minutes on
each side, every two hours".

An LC (ibclc) at one of the major hospitals in atlanta routinely tells mom's
to "set a timer. Nurse for 10 minutes on the first side, then switch to the
second side for as long as baby wants."

I've been in the room many times to witness this kind of info being
transferred. Then when they go to the ped who encourages them to nurse no
more frequently that every 2-3 hours,.....well, it's no wonder that few women
nurse longer than 6 weeks.
