And why would Dr. Schanler's work be more convincing than Paula Meier's, eh?
Because he's a doctor? Because he's a neonatologist, rather than someone
who has studied breastfeeding nuts and bolts for years??? (I know Dr. S.
also has published about breastfeeding, but I am willing to bet he doesn't
get in there and do hands on). And what would the neonatologist at your
hospital know about it? Where are his studies to show that breastfeeding is
more tiring than bottle feeding for a premature? Anyone who has ever
watched a baby breastfeeding well will know that that's not true. But
chances are this one never watches. Are his "opinions" more valuable than
yours? They aren't.

I'm sick of this attitude on physicians' parts (okay, *some* physicians'
parts). Do they question it when an occupational therapist says this baby
needs this or that to get him to feed better? No they don't, because they
know they know booh all about what occupational therapists do, actually.
But when a breastfeeding specialist says the baby needs this or this to feed
better at the breast, "bring me studies to show that what is patently
obvious to the most casual of observers is true". Like... hellllooooo!

Sorry, the heat is getting me down.

Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
