Howdy,
Barbara asked about what to call infant bowel movements and mentioned that
it might be regional- it also varies culturally within a region. When I was
working at a local prenatal clinic and asked mothers about dirty diapers, I
was often told that they don't change diapers unless they are dirty- either
urine or stool are considered dirty.

Others when asked how many a day reported one number and then asked if I
wanted to know about the nights too. Many mothers told me that their babies
didn't have dirty diapers just little boo-boos, (accidents in their pants),
others called it grunt, mess, stink, squirt, dribble, poo. poop, pooper,
dirty, dump, baby cake, caca, ditty, #2, stooly, bm, shit, stain, doodie,
pile, pies, paste, wet fart, solid, soiled, and the list goes on.

Doodle was my favorite- I had a friend who came over and needed to change
her daughter's doodle and my three year old was very curious- she watched
the whole process and then came to tell me, "Abigail had a doodle in her
diaper- looked like poop to me..."

I opt for calling it a bowel movement to parents, then offering additional
description if needed. This is a real issue for those of us in breastfeeding
who need to communicate a safety net for breastfed babies. CAthy
