<< It appears
that with some children on the spectrum, casein and gluten act as opiates on
the brain, which intensifies autistic behaviors and learning problems. The
diet also ties in with the belief that the children's guts were damaged (are
permeable), much like those of celiac disease sufferers.
While I was suspicious, I've tried it on my boys (both of whom are autistic),
and I have to say there are significant improvements. I am becoming a
believer.>>
Barnbara,
There is also the issue of eating cow meat (beef and by-products) as the
protein is obviousely present in the tissue of the cow.
<<This of course leads to all sorts of breastfeeding related questions,
including Barbara Montague's about celiac disease. It is my presumption that
yes, cow's milk does contain gluten if they are eating these grains as feed.
Do I have the research to back it up? No. But think about how dairy
proteins (casein) can transfer into mother's milk and cause problems in
sensitive babies. Wheat gluten/protein and cow's milk proteins are very
similar. It would make sense that they would transfer in similar ways. If a
celiac can't have any gluten at all, then cow's milk from grain-fed animals
is off the list.>>
This is why it makes no sense to me that people would use (cow) colostrum to
treat various disorders.
<<Now here's another question. In addition to eliminating all casein and
gluten, part of the GFCF diet therapy to repair the gut for some people
includes supplementation with glutamine, zinc, vitamin B6 and other nutrients
and amino acids found in breast milk. It would make sense to me that by
relactating a woman could provide these, and more benefits, to a child on
this therapy, provided of course, she herself was gluten and casein free.
What do you all think of this?>>
This makes sense to me. I would also imagine that a woman who was pregnant
would want to make her milk available to a previous child w/ any of these
diseases/disorders.
<<As you probably can tell, besides breastfeeding, autism (causes, treatments
and a cure) is my other life crusade.>>
This is a bit O/T, but I will mention it b/c so many LC's are dealing with
babies w/ allergies. I urge everyone to log onto www.healthcomm.com sometime
very soon.
They do have products, but the Center for Functional Medicine is doing the
most current research I am aware of on gut health and integrity and its
relationship to brain and neurological function, as well as the implications
for treating chronic disease. Unfortunately, they have done no research on
breastfeeding (actually fortunate in the sense that this is b/c they believe
there is no substitute for human milk).
Their work on autism is consistant with that of Udo Erasmus (search his
name for his website), relating to the causative relationship between leaky
gut and depression (including PPD), autism, ADD and *numerous* other
illnesses. One apparently promising treatment is the addition of essential
fatty acids to the diet (no one has done more research on fatty acids than
Erasmus). I actually suggest mothers with a history of depression add EFA's
to their diets during pregnancy and continue PP. (I do not have a large
enough number yet for even anecdotal results).
