May 15th is rapidly approaching.
I can hardly believe it. Monday will be the start of my own solo pediatric
practice. I'm the first solo pediatrician in my city to start a practice in
10 years. I will be sharing (at least temporarily) office space with another
solo pediatrician is well established. I will share 1 in 5 call with four
other pediatricians.
I definitely have a bad case of anxiety-plowing through all those manage care
contracts is daunting without a provider relations staff. Being a salaried
doc for 17 years has kept me relatively protected from the business of
medicine (this is despite doing administrative medicine for the last three
years). I am starting as a part time practice (keeping my administrative CCS
job part time until I can see positive cash flow).
Bottom line, I will continue to see Medi-Cal (our state name for Medicaid),
Healthy Families (CA State name for CHIP) as well as private insurance (I'm
on three IPA groups and applying for a fourth).
Yes, breastfeeding management and early childhood development issues will be
an important part of my practice (hope to sit for IBCLC boards in one year).
However I will see patients up to age 21. Children with special health care,
educational and mental health needs are also a special interest of mine.
I will keep you all posted on how it goes.
