Lisa states;
>>As a mother of three ecologically breastfed children, a LLLL, and an IBCLC,
(with a BSE), I can attest that many different skills come into play, and
in a non-hospital setting, nursing is not one of them.<<
At the risk of stating the obvious here, if you are NOT a nurse how can you
speak to the skills that a nurse/LC may bring to a consult in whatever
setting? Would you make the same statement with a nutritionist/LC,
psychologist/LC, MD/LC? I hope not because you wouldn't have the basis to do
so. All of us bring our related knowledge base into our consults. Perhaps if
you were an RN with a background in adult cardiology rather than maternal
child health, the specialties might feel very distinct and unrelated but
there may still be transferable listening skills, or basic physical
assessment skills that may be valuable. In my case, with 20yrs experience in
maternal child health, I can't peel the RN/LC roles apart on most days. Nor
would I want to.
I really second your emphasis on listening skills and the breadth of our
roles! It reminded me warmly of a consult I did yesterday-that occassional
span of time where you feel like it all comes together, the years of practice
have payed off and you truly can see some art in your practice....wish I
could phrase it better but hopefully it strikes a chord with someone out
there!
