hi Carol and lactnetters-
Why the big ruckus over chin pushing? Yes, I do use this technique, have
for years, and haven't seen any problems caused by it. Because I have been
working in an outpatient setting where I follow the moms and babies for as
long as they need it,I think I would know if this were creating
difficulties. When I teach the mom to do it, I emphasize that she will only
need to do this for 1-3 days, because most babies will figure out very
rapidly that a wide latch delivers a LOT more milk to them for their
efforts. I also demonstrate the correct amount of pressure by pressing with
my finger on the mom's &/or dad's wrist. If possible we get the baby on with
a good latch during the visit, one of my favorite things about working with
newborns is how SMART they are, you can watch them learning so much during
just one good feed! We also make sure that parents know they should get back
in touch with us if the feedings/sore nipples aren't resolving within just a
day or two.
Anyone else?

Subject: chin activities
no, katherine did NOT say she was pushing on chins, i was pointing out that
what might have started as gentle pressure on the chin has turned into
extreme pushing on the baby's chin in my area, and i see mothers who are
repeating this, probably adding an extra measure of force (because the
babies
become more and more resistant). yes, i feel sure that each and every one of
you is only using gentle, firm pressure, but please - i want to know is this
just an activity that "everyone" does or is there actually some reference
for
doing this to fix a baby's latch?
i do see that some replies involve pushing on the chin when the baby is
already latched on, but i must say i don't like to let a baby get latched on
improperly and then try to fix it, if i can avoid it. and, i just don't ever
see any kind of pushing on the chin helping, but rather so often causing
problems. references? i do have lots of books - if i don't have any that
mention it, where is it?
