In The Netherlands sleeping on the back (not on the side, as babies will easily
turn on their tummies that way) has been promoted for several years now (think
more than 5 at least) and the SIDS numbers decreased dramaticly almost right
away. But recently there has been some argumenting, because back-sleping babies
tend to have flat heads, which concerns many people, parents as well as health
care professionals. So recommendation now is to have babies sleep on their backs
and have them on their bellies when they are awake.

I would like to provoke some thoughts, that keep me busy. The data concerning
SIDS and sleeping position is taken from all SIDS victims in a given study. I
keep wondering if anyone has ever looked at the significance of sleeping
position in babies who are breastfed by a non-smoking/drinking/drugging mom in a
non smoking/drinking/drugging home and co-sleep. It wouldn't surprise me a bit
if sleeping position isn't a big factor in these infants.
