I humbly disagree with the comment that referring to short nursings
as "snacksa' is inappropriate. As with so many things, it's the
context as much if not more than the actual words that makes the
impact.
In talking with a mom about frequency of nursing I like to relate it
to what is likely her own eating pattern. I point out that she
sometimes wants a quick drink, other times a small snack and still
other times a 10-course dinner. I may ask her how she would feel if
someone told her she could only have the 10-course dinners, nothing
at any other time. I may also point out that without outside
influences (e.g. when her meal tray comes in the hospital, when she
or family members have to leave for work, when the boss says it's
lunch time, when everyone gets home at night) most adults wouldn't
eat on a very regular basis. Then I remind her that her baby needs
to double his or her weight in 6 months-something I strongly doubt
she wants to do herself! Add to that the fact that baby's tummy is
only about the size of its fist, and I have yet to have a mom who
doesn't indicate that she understands why baby seems to be eating
"so often".
Winnie, IBCLC
