I received a call from one of our midwives today about a 2 week old baby girl whose right breast
is engorged and redenned for the past few days and started leaking light brown colored milk
yesterday.  The baby doesn't seem to experience pain when the breast is touched.  I realize the
engorgement is not uncommon and neither is the neonatal milk but was wondering why the milk is
brownish (old blood?).  Ruth Lawrence mentions 2 cases of bloody discharge from the nipples of
infants.  One infant's swelling and discharge cleared up after 5 months (!) and the other
infant's was still present at 10 weeks, when he was lost to follow-up.  I checked the archives
and found a similar post but not the responses!

Has anyone else seen a case like this? How long before the swelling and leaking stopped?  I
suspect there is nothing that needs to be done about this but would appreciate any info you may
have.
