When our cat had kittens, there were one or two left after the others had
been given away. As tends to happen, they were still nursing at maybe 3
months. We had had her spayed, and I later mentioned to the vet that the
kittens were still nursing. She said "Oh, that's just love. She couldn't be
producing milk with no ovaries." I said I was a lactation consultant and
didn't think there was any connection. She was interested and asked me if I
would try expressing milk from her and let her know the result. I did (much
to the cat's displeasure!) and, no big surprise, there was indeed milk. So,
the vet learned something. Miriam Levitt RN, IBCLC
I have a feeling I may have told this story before, so if so, please excuse
my middle-aged forgetfulness!
