This may well be the truth.  There have been other cases of families in which
other children were treated well, while one was "selected" to be abused
and/or starved.

There was a fairly recent case like this in NYC.  A little girl was found
dead -- starved and beaten for *years*, in a home in which the other kids
were all healthy and well-nourished.

The girl was four at the time of her death and weighed less than my
(admittedly huge) daughter, who was one year old at the time.  I can't
imagine how horrible this must have been for the other kids in the family.
